Heritage Timeline
Una was historically part of the ancient Katoch kingdom of Kangra. The Jaswan State, the first offshoot of Kangra, was founded in 1170 A.D. by Raja Purab Chand with its capital at Rajpura. It eventually came under Mughal and then Sikh rule before being annexed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1815. Before 1966, Una was a tehsil of the Hoshiarpur district in Punjab. It is also the ancestral home of the Bedis, the direct descendants of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.
Cultural Essence
Una is a major site for spiritual tourism, centered around the Chintpurni Shakti Peeth—where the forehead of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. The culture is a unique synthesis of Punjabi agrarian energy and Himachali hill traditions. Fairs like Pir Nigaha and the annual Chintpurni Mela attract millions. The people are known for their hospitality and deep-rooted devotion to both Hindu and Sikh traditions.
