Heritage Timeline

Sirmaur's earliest mention dates to 634 A.D. (as Surughna). The state was founded around 1095 A.D. by Subhans Prakash, a Rajput from Jaisalmer, after a flood destroyed the original capital at Sirmur. The Prakash dynasty ruled for centuries, with Raja Karam Prakash founding Nahan in 1616. A major historical event was Raja Medni Parkash providing asylum to Guru Gobind Singh at Paonta Sahib in 1684. Sirmaur was an independent 11-gun salute princely state until it merged with Himachal Pradesh in 1948.

Cultural Essence

The culture is a blend of royal Rajput traditions and the tribal heritage of the 'Giripar' area. The 'Renuka Fair' is a major spiritual gathering celebrating the legend of Sage Jamadagni and his wife Renuka. Traditional sports like 'Thoda' (archery-based dance) are still vibrant. Sirmaur is known for its brassware, community-centric fairs, and the synthesis of Sikh and Hindu traditions at shrines like Paonta Sahib and Renuka Ji.
