Heritage Timeline

Originally a small forest village named after Goddess Shyamala, Shimla rose to prominence in 1864 when it was declared the Summer Capital of British India. For over 80 years, it was the administrative heart of the Indian empire. The Kalka-Shimla Railway, completed in 1903 with 103 tunnels, is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Post-independence, it became the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Its architecture, featuring the Viceregal Lodge and Gothic churches, remains a unique colonial heritage in the Himalayas.
