A trans-Himalayan cold desert frontier.

Lahaul & Spiti offers a rugged, high-altitude journey into a land of ancient monasteries and desolate canyons.

Heritage Timeline

Formed in 1960, this district combines two distinct trans-Himalayan regions. Lahaul historically changed hands between Ladakh and Kullu, coming under British control in 1846. Spiti, meaning 'The Middle Land', was historically part of Ladakh and has been a bastion of Tibetan Buddhism for over 1,000 years. The Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 A.D., is one of the oldest in the world. Maharaja Ranjit Singh briefly controlled Lahaul in 1840. The region remained isolated for centuries until the recent construction of the Atal Tunnel.

Cultural Essence

The culture is a profound blend of Tibetan Buddhism and rugged mountain resilience. Spiti is famous for its 'Losar' festival and masked 'Cham' dances performed by monks. Lahaul's culture is a mix of Hindu-Buddhist traditions. Communities here are known for their high-altitude agrarian skills and deep-rooted faith. Ancient thangkas, manuscripts, and the 'Deva-Loka' spiritual system define the daily lives of the inhabitants.
