Kinnaur
The enchanting 'Land of Fairy Tales'.

Kinnaur is a land of sheer cliffs, lush valleys, and high-altitude orchards where Hinduism and Buddhism meet.

Heritage Timeline

In mythological accounts, Kinnaur is the land of 'Kinners'—demigods of music and dance. Historically, it was part of the Guge kingdom (10th-11th centuries) and later the Rampur Bushahr state. Legend states the Pandavas spent their exile here. Kinnaur served as a vital link on the Silk Road to Tibet. The friendship between the Bushahr kings and Tibet allowed for centuries of tax-free trade. It was formed as the sixth district of Himachal in 1960. The administrative center is now at Reckong Peo, overlooking the sacred Kinner Kailash peak.

Cultural Essence

Its culture is a unique synthesis where Hinduism and Buddhism coexist. Villages house both temples and 'Gompas' (monasteries). Kinnaur is famous for its world-class apples and the iconic green-felted Kinnauri cap. Intricate wood carvings on temple eaves and the 'Nag' (serpent) deity worship are signatures of Kinnauri heritage. The people are known for their hospitality and traditional songs that recount ancient Himalayan lore.
